Finding Purpose Through Tragedy
Caitlin Conner was raised in a small town in central Texas and now resides in Houston, Texas. Growing up she worked in her father’s video store and on the family farm. Before May 30th, 2014, she didn’t have much to her story, but her life was simple and she was surviving.
The day before her 24th birthday, Caitlin and her newlywed husband were struck on their motorcycle by a distracted driver. The couple flew off in separate directions and sustained serious injuries. She then woke up on her birthday with a new life ahead of her. She learned of her pregnancy of only 4 weeks and had to make the biggest decision of her life. Her choice was simple in her eyes. A leg for a life. She amputated her left leg two weeks later and went home to take on pregnancy. The couple started their marriage in wheelchairs and shortly after major family losses. (They are now happily co-parenting their daughter and showing others that happiness through divorce is obtainable.)
After getting laid off from her job, she found herself searching for others like her who had gone through amputation during pregnancy but found none. What she did find was a handful of resources to start her down the next part of her journey. Sports never came naturally to her but losing a limb taught her the importance of patience and of practice. She began to try any sport she could. It started as a 5k run pushing her daughter Tinley in a stroller as a baby. Shortly after she took up CrossFit followed by triathlon, cycling, swimming, boxing, track and field events, figure skating, and obstacle racing, and is currently working on a new sport. Sports led her to many new resources but also showed her a very big need in the community.
Caitlin craved a place that had all of the adaptive resources easily accessible. After searching for it over the last few years, she knew she would have to create it herself. What began as a way to release stress and get healthy, eventually turned into her purpose. Be More Adaptive was born. Caitlin is now the CEO of Be More Adaptive, pushes for inclusivity in modeling and media, is a public speaker, and is very happy to be Tinley’s mom.
